Gentle Reminder: Just a Thought

“It’s hopeless”.

Just a thought.

“My eating will never be perfect”.

Just a thought.

“My body is ugly and worthless”.

Just a thought.

How do we feel when we think like this? No doubt disheartened, discouraged and very far away from our destination.

The good news is, we’re in charge of our thoughts. The bad news is…there is no bad news – we’re in charge of our thoughts.

We have the ability to make ourselves feel better in an instant, because what we think determines how we feel.

We can examine our thoughts to see which ones are making us feel unhappy or holding us back.

Thoughts are like bubbles we can choose to burst. We can then decide to replace them with something more realistic and helpful. Something that would make us feel better, such as:

“I’m capable of learning and changing”.

“My eating doesn’t have to be perfect, it just has to be right for me”.

“Everyone’s body is valuable, including mine”.

If we wait to think better of ourselves until we feel better about ourselves, we’ll be waiting forever. Instead, we can change the way we think to help ourselves feel better now.

We have the capacity to alter our experience in a heartbeat.

As Marcus Aurelius said: “the happiness of your life depends upon the quality of your thoughts”.

That’s more empowering than believing we’re helpless victims to the negative thoughts in our own heads, isn’t it?

Just a thought.

  1. Great post Julie. It’s very empowering to think we can choose our thoughts, they are not just randomly assigned to us. We have control over our thoughts and therefore our emotions. Lxx

  2. Thank you for sharing!.. There is no such thing as perfection in nature and the only “imperfect” person is the one thinking everyone has to be perfect to their ideas… everyone is perfect in their own way, as it should be, and I do not worry about it as I am what I am, happy with who I am and don’t try to be like someone or something else… 🙂

    1. Very well put, Dutch. Telling ourselves we have to be perfect can only make us miserable as we’ll never be good enough. We’re all human and imperfect and that’s OK. Great to hear your thoughts.

  3. It is a reassuring thought to realize “As Marcus Aurelius said: “the happiness of your life depends upon the quality of your thoughts”. Because happy thoughts are my trademark! I hope you are equally blessed! Thanks for visiting JanBeek. Come again! I look forward to perusing more of your posts!

This quote says it all to me. And this post applies to all areas of life, not just those struggling with eating problems.

Stepping forward can be as scary as standing on the edge of a cliff. But if we wait to feel better we take the chance that the edge is behind us, not in front and if we stand still we risk stepping backwards over the edge.

    1. I’m really glad this post resonated with you so much. As you say, stepping forward can be risky but staying stuck can feel so much worse. Many thanks for your comment, great to hear from you.
